These Could be the COOLEST Industrial Artifacts I have EVER had.
A couple of years ago, we had the opportunity to work on a once in a lifetime salvaging job at HERSHEY Chocolate Factory. I can remember as a child going to this place for a tour and the air was SOOOOOOOOOO overwhelming from the scent of Cocoa that I actually got SICK. Of course, at my young age, I had no idea .............. nor did I care ............... That the awesome rollers that you are looking at were the reason for the smell.
What you are looking at are parts of a circa 1915 CHOCOLATE CONCHE. I know, I had never heard of one either. A chocolate conche is a huge steel or iron tub about 10 X 12 feet with a corrugated granite bottom and a group of these granite rollers with a matching corrugated profile. Hundreds of pounds of Cocoa butter and cocoa would evenly distribute the cocoa butter in the chocolate and promotes flavor, smoothness and aroma through frictional heat, and begin the process of making delicious CHOCOLATE! Too Cool!
DIMENSIONS, PLEASE READ
What we are offering is a beautiful yard object, piece of furniture, or anything you can imagine! It will still be around for CENTURIES after we are all dust. The rollers themselves are made of machined gray Granite. The actual granite roller measure 22 1/2" long and are approximately 11 1/2" in diameter. The granite roller with the center stem measures 29" long and attach's to a U shaped cast piece of steel, then 2 of the rollers with U brackets, attach to 2 pieces of flat steel across the top. The entire roller set as shown measures approx 23" tall by 48" long, and 29" wide.  All told, each roller set weighs approx. 700 lbs. ea., plus the pallet for a total of about 750 lbs.   In addition, The rollers were each made with a flat
spot on them so that they will actually rest without rolling
. This makes them
IDEAL for a table base, bench, garden art, counter island, or whatever you can dream up
. You are only limited by your imagination!
CONDITION, PLEASE READ
These rollers have a ton of character and patina.
They are not perfect, they have a few chips, rust, and the granite may or may not have some dark spots in the natural granite. (please see pictures) I feel like the marks and cool rust stains just adds to the patina but, may not be for everyone. Also, some of the rollers may have fine granite markings on one roller and course granite marking on the other, or one roller may or may not be a little larger or smaller than the other. They have a lot of variations, bumps and bruises from a 100 yrs of making chocolate!
Some of the marks and stains can be cleaned up if you like, or left as is to show off 100 years of chocolate making

CONCHE HISTORY
Rodolphe Lindt invented the "conche" in Switzerland in 1879. It produced chocolate with superior aroma and melting characteristics compared to other processes used at that time. Legend has it that Lindt mistakenly left a mixer containing chocolate running overnight. Though he was initially distraught at the waste of energy and machine wear and tear, he quickly realized he had made a major breakthrough. Before conching was invented, solid chocolate was gritty and not very popular. Lindt's invention rapidly changed chocolate from being mainly a drink to being made into bars and other confections.
Lindt's original conche consisted of a granite roller and granite trough; such a configuration is now called a "long conche" and can take more than a day to process a tonne of chocolate. The ends of the trough were shaped to allow the chocolate to be thrown back over the roller at the end of each stroke, increasing the surface area exposed to air. A modern rotary conche can process 3 to 10 tonnes of chocolate in less than 12 hours. Modern conches have cooled jacketed vessels containing long mixer shafts with radial arms that press the chocolate against vessel sides. A single machine can carry out all the steps of grinding, mixing, and conching required for small batches of chocolate.

Md Architectural Rescue is a different type of recycling company. We have operated in
Baltimore
and surrounding areas since 1996. After starting out rescuing fireplace mantles and cast iron door locks from construction dumpsters, we have opened our eyes to may types of waste that are often over looked and fall through the cracks. Our focus is and always will be vintage items of the highest quality. But with our eyes now open we put a lot of effort in bringing you high end collectibles from every industry available and at a very reasonable price. All our items are salvaged and are for the most part American Made. One week we could be in an old School, Brewery, Factory, and the following week at a  Shipyard or Power plant, you just never know.
