Estate Sale Find: Vintage Regency Chess Set 3" King. Complete.  (Likely early 1900's vintage)
Very attractive, quality set of chess pieces (No Board).  Very sturdy (9 ounces in weight just for the pieces) - so they have relatively few chips/nicks (although there are a few) compared to other vintage sets.  The overall condition is surprisingly good.
You can see also that a number of the pieces "nod" (or "lean") from minor warping - not enough to bother most people, just enough to be a curiosity and add charm.  My understanding is that this happens as humidity affects wood over the long term.  You don't see newer wood sets with this characteristic.
The set is complete, although one of the knights is a replacement.  It's a close replica, possibly from a similar set, but I would guess a skilled woodworker made this piece.  The shape is a little imperfect.  (Please see pics).  The knights have a lot of character and skilled carving - a good feature of this set.
The last picture shows the replacement knight, and one pawn that has been repaired (top piece broke, someone used a small nail from the top to re-attach.)  The pawn and bishop on the left side have lost a little varnish.  The other bishop has a tiny chip on its upper disk.  So many pieces are excellent.  Nice when the upper castle walls of the rooks are complete -  they often have significant chips
