GRACE DARLING - Victorian Silver Rowing Boat Brooch - Mourning 1865 Antique

Description

An extremely rare and unusual Victorian rowing boat brooch made to commemorate Grace Darling and mourning for lives lost at sea.
Grace Darling became famous for her act of heroism in rescuing sailors and passengers from the ship wrecked paddle steamer SS Forfarshire on stormy night of 7th September 1838. She was immortalised in songs and popular culture and Queen Victoria even sent her £50 in recognition of her bravery.
As such the image of a rowing boat became synonymous with her heroism and a symbol of mourning for lives lost at sea.
This is a wonderful opportunity to add a rare piece to any maritime history or mourning jewellery collection.
AGE: Victorian - full English registration kite mark for 27th March 1865.

MATERIAL: Silver.
CONDITION: Good antique condition with no dents or splits to the silver. Hollow pressed silver construction. Simple ‘c’ clasp is secure. Steel pin.
