    Description

Stunning large antique faience tureen created by Edmé Samson.  The tureen has an artichoke finial and is decorated around the top with molded mushrooms, peppers, and peapods.  The whole is hand-painted predominantly in pink, yellow, and green shades with floral and vegetal motifs and is trimmed in gold.  The bowl rests on four paw feet. Felt pads have been applied to the undersides.
Edmé Samson, an expert porcelain manufacturer and talented artist, founded his house in 1845.
Samson's clientele included museums wishing to replace prized pieces which had been lost or damaged as well as wealthy patrons seeking hard-to-find items to supplement or complete their collections. The high caliber of Samson reproductions resulted in pieces that were virtually indistinguishable from the originals, a situation further complicated by the fact that the company copied the original makers marks but did not always include their own, although Samson did not create his pieces with intent to deceive. Samson's outstanding craftsmanship made their pieces highly collectible in their own right.
This tureen is modeled after pieces made by Veuve Perrin, a Marseilles based factory which produced quality faience between 1748 and 1803. The signature, a conjoined VP, together with a stylized double S, indicates this is a Samson creation.
Condition:  Overall excellent for age.  There are a very few scattered glaze flakes and light wear to gilt trim.
    Dimensions:
    12" W x 10"H x 8 1/2"W.
    All returns cheerfully accepted.
