    Description

I AM NOT SELLING A KIT
    ,
    only
    TWO
    new, full-size copies of the
    PLANS
    for an RC
    DENNYPLANE JR.
to scratch-build this historic model plane in TWO sizes.
This magazine cover from 1939 shows teenage movie star Mickey Rooney releasing a Reginald Denny
    DENNYPLANE JR
. Reginald was a Hollywood actor in the 1920s, 30s & 40s who also owned a hobby shop. He had a custom of giving a completed
    DENNYPLANE
to child actors who appeared in movies at about the same time frame. So likely Mickey Rooney was a recipient of one of those completed models.
The wingspan of this famous vintage, semi-scale, free flight model is 72".
    MOST
patterns are shown on this really large
    PLAN
with the exception of some fuselage cross braces.
I ADD A MODEL BUILDER ARTICLE & PLAN TO UPDATE THE 72" OT FF FOR RC.
The model was based on the 1928 Stinson SM-2 Junior straight-wing executive aircraft that was popular at that time and was often used by Hollywood in its many aviation movies in the 30s. In World War 2 Reg Denny pioneered RC target drones for aerial gunnery practice.
This great Old Time Ignition Engine Free Flight was updated in Model Builder to 3-channel RC. The updated
    PLAN
includes the location of RC servos, engine thrust and beefed-up construction to take the strain of modern high RPM engines. Any .25 to .35 engine will do. The long-stroke ignition engines turned long props about 6-7,000 rpms. So the strain on the wing spars was not great. Newer glow engines are short stroke and turn shorter props at 13,000+ rpms.
The plan also shows additional wing spars and bracing that
ALL OLD TIME FREE FLIGHT DESIGNS NEED
when converted to RC and higher RPM model engines.
Old time free flights were first converted to rudder-only RC control as trainers and the wings began folding up in flight. We quickly learned to add (1) hardwood full length spars to replace the balsa spars from the 1930s and 40s, or (2) extra full length balsa spars. Then when elevator and throttle controls were added for a full 3-channels the extra beefing up of the wing structure was absolutely essential.
I got my copy many, many years ago from John Pond. He and I swapped plans for a few years. I would send him 35 or more plans he did not have in his 20,000+ collection and, after making copies, he would return them along with copies of models plans such as this one that I was interested in.
YOU ARE PURCHASING TWO NICE, CLEAN, WHITE, FULL-SIZE COPIES OF THE PLANS FOR A 48" & 72" SPAN OLD TIME FF MODEL CONVERTED TO A 3-CHANNEL RC. THEY ARE FOLDED AND IN A MANILA ENVELOPE.
