Antique Victorian 14K Yellow Gold, Opal, and Pearl Brooch

Description

This is a stunning antique brooch. It has a large 10.3-carat gray opal with blue flashes. In brighter light, it has a wonderful purplish hue with blue fire. In inside light is has a more muted color. The pictures above show it in both lights so you can see. This is set in a 14k yellow gold setting with three halos of seed pearls surrounding it. There are a total of 143 pearls and the opal does have some crazing that is mentioned in the appraisal. The clasp arm is a little loose that is not mentioned in the appraisal. It closes smoothly but then opens with some wiggling. The appraisal is for replacement purposes and not a value of the historical piece. This appraisal was also done over a year ago when the gold price was significantly lower than it is now, so the value is even higher now. This has been professionally re-clasped in the 1920s. This was bought at an estate of a well-known local doctor in northern Missouri. I spoke with the family and told many interesting stories and history behind a lot of their parent collections. This is in good antique condition and is circa 1870 with the clasp dating to 1920. This measures 1 1/2" long and 1 1/8" wide.
