Description
This item was a mystery until I was able to determine Mattison Machine Works was a manufacturer of industrial woodworking equipment. Previously in Beloit, Wisconsin, the company moved to Rockford, Illinois in 1918.According to
Planers, Matchers and Molders in America
, this company was founded in 1902 by Chris Mattison. According to their trademark filing, the company dates back to 1900. So we can determine this item dates sometime between 1909 (based on box patent) to 1918.
According to
Wood Working Digest 1955-56 Directory
, a Mattison universal turning and variety machine was patented in 1897.
It appears this handy salesman's sample was a way to show what Mattison machines could produce. It has it's original box and paper label. The box is marked on the side "Patented December 7, 1909 ~ Mason Box Company ~ Attleboro Falls, Mass.". There is a cryptic message on the bottom as shown in the last photo: "This {indiscipherable but with backwards letters} Wants Me".
Excellent antique condition. In original box, which has one flap trying to tear away. Original label intact. Box paper discoloration from age. No other mentionable blemishes or boo-boo's.
Always happy to pass through discounts on combined shipping. I only charge actual postage, and always use recycled packing materials.
Note some photos appear redundant because I take photos from all possible angles.
On symmetrical items, these photos may appear redundant when there are no distinguishing differences or condition issues between side views.
The item listed is being sold as is, as pictured and as described to the best of my knowledge. If you have a question on an item prior to purchase, please ask. Remember, when buying vintage expect imperfections as these items have a history and have been in the possession of others. I try to list EVERY flaw which would be commented on something in an antique or vintage condition – this does not mean all imperfections resulting from normal wear & use require comment. My goal is to have no rude surprises upon receipt
