Antique LIMOGES ENAMEL PORTRAIT BROOCH PENDANT - 14K, Diamonds, Pearls (4Z23-H)

Description

Exceptional and exceptionally fine signed antique Limoges Enamel Portrait Brooch Pendant set in 14K Gold and encircled by Diamonds and Pearls. Remarkable workmanship in this late 19th Century “Renaissance Revival” piece in a unique Shield form. The Shield may be symbolic to the sitter / the motif.
The Portrait of a male, possibly a warrior with multi color enamel including a vivid cobalt blue background. The regal profile portrait of a bearded man in the finest costume, including a feathered hat.
The Enamel Portrait is highly detailed and parts are in slight bad-relief (when views up close at different angles and lighting). The vivid cobalt blue background sparkles with a wonderful iridescence as it catches the light in different angles. Textured designs below the surface. We believe the artist signed the portrait with their initial ‘A’ in gold (bottom left). The costume has a row of pearls that is mimicked the jeweled Pearl and Diamond border of its frame.
The Enamel portrait also Shield-shaped is mounted in beautiful 14K Yellow Gold mounting (Shield form) encircled with a jeweled border of alternating sparkling Diamonds and lustrous Pearls,
There are 14 Diamonds and 14 Pearls. The Diamonds are Old European Cut having a total approximate carat weight of .70. with an average color: G-H-I and an average clarity: VS. they are prong mounted. The Pearls are stunning; round, smooth and well matched in size, color and luster, mounted on posts. They have an approximate size of 2.36mm - 2.50mm.
This piece was designed to be versatile; can be worn as a Pendant (Necklace) or a Brooch. On the reverse is a Pin and secure safety clasp when wearing as a Brooch. To wear as a Pendant, the hinged bale lifts up, swiveled to accept a chain to wear around the neck as a Necklace. To wear again as a pin, turn swivel link, fold flat against the back. It is now ready to be worn as a Brooch. The hinged bale and swivel are in perfect working order, as is the safety lock and pin.
This piece was well cared for and is in near mint condition; The cobalt blue enamel on the reverse is pitted areas (not damage) but a result of its firing when it was made. The darker line on the reverse seen under high magnification is a color variation; not a hairline. The Enameled portrait is in very fine condition; considered in excellent condition.. Normal very minor abrasions to metal consistent with age. No cracks or repairs.
The piece is marked 14 on a small round disk near the clasp on the reverse and was assayed to confirm its carat at 14K. This exquisite small antique Limoges Enamel Pendant Brooch Shield measures approximately 1” x 7/8” (with the bale folded down). It weighs approximately 5 grams (3.21 pennyweights).
It shows well in the photographs and just as beautiful if not more so in person. The photos were taken with and without a camera flash, on various surfaces and lighting to best show the piece. (4Z23-H)
