    Description

Many old timers on the SF Peninsula will remember Levy Bros. Dept. Store. Levy Bos. was founded in Half Moon Bay in 1872 and incorporated in 1892. Over the years they were a dry goods store, Wells Fargo Stage stop, saloon operator, telephone exchange operator, cheese factory, early Buick dealership, and finally a department store with locations in San Mateo, Half Moon Bay, Burlingame, South San Francisco, Redwood City, Foster City and Vacaville. Levy Brothers, one of the most successful business operations on the Peninsula for over 100 years, closed its doors in 1987, due to over-expansion.
This heavy brass building corner-stone plaque was removed from the San Mateo store, on Third Avenue, when it relocated to Forth Avenue, in 1952. It is solid brass, 24.5" x 10" x .5" and weighs a hefty 13 lbs.It has a beautiful, rich green patina, but could be polished, if desired.
