Rare, antique King Richard II chess set from the 1940's. Set includes chess table, red velvet chairs and unique, hand-painted pieces. Purchased in Michigan in the late 50's or early 60's, well-kept ever since.
Table is wooden with a hand-inlaid top to represent the board. Great craftsmanship went into this table. Table has a few scratches on the sides or corners and at the bottom on the hexagon base from players resting their feet. Other than minor wear over the decades, table is in remarkable shape.
The chess pieces are made from a resin or heavy plaster. Each piece is hand-painted with great detail. Green felt on the bottoms as to not scratch the table. The kings represent King Richard II, the bishops look like bishops, the knights like actual knights and so on. Some wear from use but still in amazing shape. You can tell by the detail into each piece this is rare and one of a kind.
Chairs are made from crushed red velvet in a lipstick red color. The legs have some minor wear but the chair remains super soft with no holes or stains. Makers mark under the chair shows it came from Truchan Bros Furniture, Port Huron, Michigan. Truchan Bros closed in 1971.
Table - 37.5 x 37.5”, 26” tall
Chairs - 41 3/4” tall, 18” wide
King Richard II - 9” tall, weighs ~ 3lbs
I've reached out to the World Chess Hall of Fame in St. Louis, Missouri as well as chess author and collector Duncan Pohl and neither have seen a chess set like this. Truly one of a kind!!
