Description
For your consideration this is an antique boxwood and ebony weighted chess knight made in England around 1900. It came from an incomplete chess set that appears to be made by F.H. Ayres (Ayres was a competitor of Jaques in that era). The top is hand-carved of boxwood and finished in black, while the base is turned genuine ebony (commonly done for knights in that era). This knight has a well-worn look from age and use. Using a calibrated micrometer, the knight measures 2.069 inches in height and 1.281 inches in diameter at the base. Please compare these measurements to your needs, as chess pieces can be hard to match. For comparison the incomplete set that donated this knight has a king height of roughly 3.6".
The foot felt is intact. There are small chips in the ebony around the foot. The finish on the boxwood is wearing through. The top crown stamp is intact. Please evaluate the overall condition from the pictures. This knight does not have drilled eyes.
