    Description

    For your consideration this is an Ayres chess rook dating to the 1890-1910 period, in genuine ebony. Hand-turned in the Staunton pattern. This is the king-side black rook as-seen with the crown stamp on the turret.
    The rook is weighted, and it is about 2.0" in height and 1.25" in diameter at the base. The base baize is in good condition (see picture).
    Please see photos to evaluate the condition of this piece. Some minor restoration was performed on the turret by the world's foremost chess restorer. I can't see the repair even with a jeweler's loupe (it's that good).
    Ayres was a competitor to Jaques and Co. in the late 1800s.
