An incredible genuine antique Essex Crystal of supreme quality, fabulously finely hand crafted to depict a Westie or West Highland White Terrier dog!
Essex crystals are domes of natural rock crystal, reverse carved and then reverse painted to create a real 3d image that jumps out at you. Coupled with forced perspective techniques and the magnification effect of the domed crystal, this gives a uniquely lifelike impression as the subject moves, there's nothing like a genuine, high quality Essex Crystal.
Here each tuft of fur is meticulously reproduced, the 3d effect meaning shading and light reflections are real and look amazing. Every aspect is wonderfully finely carved and painted, from his expressive eyes, to his mouth whiskers to the tiny wet spot on his nose! He has a further panel of rock crystal to the back as protection, and is set into a superb quality, solid 15 carat gold mount, for wear as a stickpin.
He dates to around 1900 and is 3" long overall, the crystal being an excellent size at 18 mm diameter.
It's in excellent, fully wearable condition throughout. There's a pale halo around the dog's head where it appears water may at one time have ingressed, but there's no loss or damage. It weighs 6.4 grams.
