Description
VINTAGE (1940s-1950s) HAND CARVED & HAND PAINTED CHESS SET. TURNED WOOD & CARVED OXE BONE, made by the TARASCAN INDIANS OF MEXICO.Originally purchased in a small town in the mountains of Mexico in the late 1940s or early 1950s, by a neighbor's parents who traveled there often when they were younger.
Condition is "Used". Amazingly, there have been only two casualties: One of the white knights carving is missing and one of the black knights carving was broken off the pedestal and reattached. Otherwise, there are no chips & no breaks to any of the pieces. The paint is still bright & shiny, a testament to the fact it's been sitting on the box for decades! It needs a good cleaning but I'm leaving that to the buyer as I don't want to cause harm or damage.
Comes with the original hand made folding wood chess board.
Sizes:
Kings & Queens stand approx 5.25" tall on 1.75" wide bases.
Bishops & Knights are approx 4" tall on bases between 1.25" & 1.5" wide.
Rooks are 3.5" tall with bases approx 1.25" wide.
Pawns are 3.25" tall on 1.25" wide bases.
Board is 15.25" x 15.5" when opened.
